Bailey’s Story: Building Independence, One Skill at a Time
By Alex Hunt, Founder of Fleet Healthcare
Some of the stories that stay with me most are the ones about finding the right person after a long search. Not just the right qualifications, but the right connection — someone who genuinely understands a client and shows up for them, again and again.
Bailey’s story, told by his family, is exactly that kind of story.
Bailey has autism spectrum disorder with a moderate intellectual disability, and his family has been on a long journey to get to where they are today.
A Long, Hard Road Before Fleet
Bailey’s family is honest about how difficult things were in the years before finding the right support.
“If you’d have asked me that 24 years ago, I would’ve said hugely, because it was, you know, Bailey didn’t sleep. We were backwards and forwards to hospitals and, you know, he’s having seizures and all sorts of different things. And when he started school, things started to get a little bit more complicated, and trying to find a therapist that understood Bailey was more difficult. We basically just sort of scraped through life.”
That honesty matters. Finding the right support for a loved one with complex needs is rarely straightforward, and it often takes far longer than it should.
A Therapist Who Truly Understands Bailey
What changed things for Bailey’s family was finding an occupational therapist who genuinely connected with him.
“Sophie is so committed. I know that she put in a lot more hours of her own time than she probably needed to do. We love her personality. We love the support that she gives us. We love the fact that she has a connection with Bailey. Not only does she support Bailey here at home, she supports him at his day program.”
“I don’t know where we would be without her.”
That kind of commitment — going beyond the scheduled session — is exactly what we hope every client and family experiences with our clinicians.
Independence, Skill by Skill
The progress Bailey has made speaks for itself.
“Since Sophie, Bailey has done so much. He’s washing himself independently. He’s tying his shoelace. He dresses himself independently now, where before we used to have to put his clothes out for him. Now he chooses his own clothes.”
“He’s got the visual support there if he needs it, but I don’t think he even uses it, but it’s always there.”
Each of those small, everyday skills adds up to something much bigger: real independence, and the confidence that comes with it.
Support That Goes Beyond the Session
For Bailey’s family, the value of good care is something they don’t take for granted.
“Good therapists are very, very hard to find, and we feel so fortunate.”
And when asked whether they’d recommend Fleet Healthcare to others, the answer left no doubt.
“Oh, every day of the week and twice on a Sunday, without a doubt. The commitment, the communication, totally reliable, compassionate. What is there not to recommend?”
Why This Story Matters
Bailey’s story is a reminder that the right therapist can change the trajectory of someone’s life — not through one dramatic moment, but through consistent, genuine care that builds real skills and real independence over time.
For Bailey and his family, that difference is clear.
More independence.
More confidence.
And a team they know they can rely on.
