Kay’s Story: Getting Stronger and Staying Independent at 88

By Alex Hunt, Founder of Fleet Healthcare

I’ve worked with a lot of clients rebuilding their strength after a difficult health setback, and one thing that always stands out is how much it takes — not just physically, but in confidence too. Getting back to feeling capable again is rarely a straight line.

Kay’s story is a great example of that.

She’s 88, living with osteoporosis, and has been through more this past year than most people face in a decade.

“My name is Kay Johnson. I’m 88 now, unbelievably. I’ve got osteoporosis. I’ve had 2 broken vertebrae, and then last year I had a fall and I fractured my sacrum, and they sent me to rehab where they fractured the second sacrum. So I had 10 weeks in hospital.”

From there, her focus has been on rebuilding her strength safely, in a way that fits her life.

A Difficult Road to Recovery

Ten weeks in hospital takes a toll, and Kay is honest about how much ground she’d lost.

“I got weak in hospital and when I came out I still did exercise but this is more intense.”

That honesty matters. Real recovery often starts from a genuine setback, not from a clean slate.

Getting Stronger, Session by Session

Since starting with Lucy, Kay has noticed a real, measurable difference.

“Lucy’s been coming to me for the last 3 months. I’m definitely stronger.”

It’s the kind of steady, consistent progress that builds on itself over time — each session laying the groundwork for the next.

A Birthday Moment That Proved How Far She’d Come

For Kay, the clearest evidence of her progress came in an unexpected moment.

“I went out for my birthday with my whole family and when we got there the lift was out to the second floor and I thought, ‘Oh my heavens, I’ll never get up there.’ Anyway, I went up there without any bother. So, you know, that to me was a proof that I have improved a lot.”

Moments like that — small in the telling, huge in the living — are exactly why we do this work.

The Comfort of Care at Home

Kay also speaks to what it means to receive this kind of support at home, in her own environment.

“As you get older, to have things come to you, oh, it’s so much better. You’re in your own setting, and it means when Lucy’s not here, I know exactly what to do and where to do it, even if I don’t do it.”

That familiarity — knowing the space, knowing the routine — makes it easier to stay consistent between sessions, which is often where the real progress happens.

Why This Story Matters

Kay’s story is a reminder that strength and independence can be rebuilt at any age, with the right support delivered consistently, in the right environment.

“I find it really helpful. I’m very happy with Fleet and Lucy. It’s been a great success.”

For Kay, that success is clear.
Better strength.
Better confidence.
And the independence to keep living life on her own terms.
